Seems wierd. Even the st/rs lines of the newer ones all seem to be 5 door. 3 door focus' were lovely.

    What gives?

I don't think they make one at all, cheaper to just have one bodytype to suit all markets. Rumour has it that vw will follow with only 5 door golfs.

Car makers have gone away from 3 door variants in the last number of years and instead created small sporty 3dr coupe derived niche models from the 5dr versions - Opel Astra GTC, Renault Megane Coupe, etc. Ford had plans to introduce a 3dr coupe Focus with the Capri badge but it never materialised. Sales of these models has kind of dried up in recent times so hard to justify the investment.

The new golf line is crap. Can't believe anyone is buying into them being nice cars. I'd rather a dawoo matiz. At least they are not pretending to be high end cars

it's because, however attractive a two/three door is to enthusiasts, to most people it is the poverty model and the bulk of them want 4/5 doors. They can charge more for it too of course.

Hatchbacks in that segment are getting longer and fatter in every generation, and there comes a point where 3 doors in a big hatchback body look a bit odd. You end up with huge heavy impractical front doors and/or a bulbous arse. So if you want 3 doors in the future it'll probably have to be the "coupe" derivative, if there is one that is (e.g. Scirocco).

The models that are bought new by enthusiasts (GTI's, ST's, RS) are also getting older in age profile, due to the sheer cost of the cars new and insuring them - these are generally fellas with kids where 3 doors are a bit useless.
