Boards.ie Obsession with LGBTQ+

I joined boards.ie in February and there must have been 20 upward threads regarding gender and sexuality but not in the LGBTQ Forum.

Why are all these straight people obsessing over gender and sexuality?

It's like they view it like the Zombies in the walking dead and us queers are coming to attack them in their beds.

Is this new or has this obsession been on boards a long time?

I'm honestly baffled by it. is this representative of wider society or just online?

I honestly think it allows the general population of boards to express a bit of latent homophobia and get away with it (not that I agree with that, and I know the mods in here would crush it if it were to happen in here)

As for the current thread in AH, I admire your perseverance, but I fear you are beating your head against a wall there.

Its been around a long time. No. I wouldn't take this site at all as representative of wider society. A lot of it can be obsessive rereg accounts.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Yeh I'm not here long so I will probably give up (edit: responding to those types of posts) after another few months.

Though I am known for my perseverance lol :)

I just find it all a bit mad tbh.

Like I'm not offended by it I think.

    Thanks for your feedback JoeytheParrot

Apologies I didn't want to attack AH, more so 9 pages into the 20+ thread on gender and sexuality on AH I was a bit bamboozled.

Since I joined I've noticed this recurring theme and for me it came to a head when all the threads on the George Incident had to be shut down.

I find it funny how people get so worked up still about something that doesn't affect them. I've seen people comment on LGBTQ+ interest articles on the likes of the journal/independent but I see it as different here, as people are going out of their way to start these threads. I find that interesting.

It's a popular social topic and issue, it has constant mainstream coverage. You don't have to talk about people discussing it in a pejorative manner. You don't know where they are coming from.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,695 ✭✭✭gizmo81

    Geographically? Mentally? Religiously?

Less than 1% of articles on any news site (other than specialist) a day will be LGBTQ+ orientated, I don't believe that constant.

I believe I responded with decorum and intelligence to some of the posts below from
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057759716&page=4

Great. What brand of Tampons do you use?
God I miss the days when men where men and women where women....
Boys should not be playing with Barbie dolls. If you want to raise your kid to be some sissy then go ahead but I won't be giving out to my son for laughing at yours and his Barbie.
You're not 'allowing' them to do anything, you're deliberately screwing them up in other to further societal acceptance of your abnormality.
Why not just raise them normally?
Blame psychology. F***ed up excuse for a science.
That's the way the world works. If children made decisions for themselves none of them would go to school do their homework and we'd be left with generation after generation of lazy idiots.Although based on some of your posts maybe that's what happened in your house growing up.

I don't believe these opinions deserve any respect but I didn't make assumptions about their parents, their gender, their sexuality. I have engaged so I didn't treat them as beneath consideration.

Welcome to the Internet in 2017, unfortunately.

FWIW, I've been here a long time and I'd almost forgotten After Hours even exists. Subscribe to the forums you like and make use of the My Forums tab on the homepage instead. I find it's a much more worthwhile and manageable experience.

That said, LGBTQ+ news stories and opinions seem to be everywhere these days. Boards is no exception and unfortunately, on the Internet especially, not knowing what you're talking about is no barrier to talking about it at length.

    I love this this quote!

Yeh i'm realising that AH isn't a place to thread because it's just rehash the same topics.

Seems like a small number tbh OP

I'd have thought there would have been many times that

There've been threads attacking lgbt people in the lgbt section
So I'm not surprised that they're in the rest (I suspect After Hours) of boards

Aren't they correct in assuming that lgbt people are trying to
    a) convert them
    b) kill them
    c) take their partner\husband\wife off them

I think some people are interested in a general, grown up conversation. LGBTQ+ is a topic that would have been more difficult to discuss previously, but things have changed.

Unfortunately, there are also some people interested in being hateful and/or disruptive and these people are empowered by the Trump narrative.

I am quite surprised but more disturbed at the comments I have read aimed at LGBTQ people and yet it is allowed by Boards.ie ?
I have seen posters get warnings and infractions for what I would deem minor challenges to others, but blatant homophobia being allowed is disturbing.
Genuine Question to a mod on here , can you answer that or give any reason for it?

No. The mods here can't answer for mods on other forums on this site.

Just a query, but would it be worth while lobbying Mods to include a ban on homophobia/transphobia on Forum Charters? Are we allowed to do that?

Homophobia and Transphobia are dealt with pretty swiftly in this forum, point 14 of the charter in this forum calls out this forum as a safe space for LGBT people and I do think that's actively upheld.

In general blatant examples usually attract mod action pretty quickly across the site too. The issue, as I see it, is that there are a lot of passive remarks, inappropriate jokes and 'just under the radar' comments that are made routinely in other fora and these are typically allowed to pass. In the past I've reported a few comments that I thought were over the line, I assume some kind of action or review happens behind the scenes but I have yet to see cards for these types of posts in other fora unless the comment in question is pretty blatant.

I've also seen moderators make these comments, one mod in particular springs to mind and I have seen this person make several comments/jokes in poor taste on several occasions.

    Thanks for getting back.
Is it possible for you as a mod to contact the "head" of Boards.ie and ask that homophobic comments be banned from Boards.ie.

I would have that it was a given that a forum site would not allow racist or homophobic comments to stand.

Given what I have read about AH it seems homophobic comments are allowed, which is quite disturbing and shocking to say the least.

There's been a massive surge in right-wing, alt-right nonsense in After Hours and i think it's down to people setting out to be deliberately provocative. They're out to upset people and wind them up.

    Mod

Folks the lgbt forum is not really a place to give out about other boards.ie forums.

The lgbt moderators only have responsibility for the lgbt forum

If you have an issue with another forum and feel there are issues then I would suggest the following
1 Report posts you feel do not meet that forums charter
2 If you feel action taken is inadequate then go through the feedback process; contact the mods, then c mods then use the feedback forum

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? Thanks Joey .

Dont mean to throw a spanner in the works as it were, but I would have thought that any decent person who saw racist of homophobic stuff online would automatically remove it.

I am not here to defend other moderators and I am not responsible for them. I am responsible for moderating this forum only.

How other forums moderate themselves on this site is upto the moderators there. Of course as you asked earlier you can lobby for charter change in other forums.

This is a general thing on the internet and it's mostly ill-informed straight men who know they get a response and do it for fun. It's malicious and hateful.

What's nearly as bad are the people who give full blown, over the top responses. It's easy bait.
