Can you tell me if there is a problem in the Stillorgan area? There has been a very strong chemical/earthy taste for the last week or more.
    Thanks

Yes there's a strong earthy taste on the water in Ballinteer for the past week or so. I reported it to Irish Water today and they are looking into it.

Same here in Sandyford. Water is undrinkable. The tastes is very earthy is the only way to describe it have had to stock up on bottled water for the office.
Something to do with the Stillorgan reservoir I would imagine

Having the same issue in Ballinteer as well, seems to have gotten more pungent over the last day or two, couldn't stomach drinking it last night!

Is there any update on what is happening here?

The taste of the water seems to be getting worse.

Everywhere in Sandyford I have tried the water it has had the horrible earthy taste (gym, two coffee shops and my office)

Surely Irish Water must know what is happening by now?

    Hi Micheal,

I don't need to talk about a specific account. I was just wondering what is happening in the Sandyford / Stillorgan / Ballinteer area. There is obviously something wrong with the reservoir in Stillorgan as it is the areas fed by this that have the problem.

    Is it safe to drink?

    Hi John,
Irish water came out and flushed the pump outside my house. However, this has made no difference, the water tastes so bad it is almost undrinkable. In fact we are worried that there is some contamination seeping into the water that comes in to our house it tastes that bad.

I told Irish Water that the flush had no effect but I have had no further contact with them. I can't believe that the only way to contact them is via this board. Their customer service is very poor, I can't get over how poor it is - and I was one of the fools who paid my water charges. I PM'd one of the Irish water reps on this board to organise for them to come out to my house but nothing has happened since then.

As far as I am aware the water in this area is not supplied by the Stillorgan reservoir - I know this because I attended the public meetings regarding their plans to cover the reservoir. Water in this area comes from Vartry.

I will update here if I have any resolution with this.

    Hi john kinsella,

    Thanks for your patience.

We have received an update in relation your query regarding water quality.

The areas of Ballinteer, Churchtown, Sandyford, parts of Dundrum and surrounding areas are supplied by the Ballyboden Water Supply Zone which has undergone an initiative to monitor and remove topsoil from the local reservoir in the area. These works include the following:

    - Increased Falconry activity to keep bird life around the reservoir to a minimum
    - Maintain reservoir fencing and request further fencing around the reservoir
    - Increased patrols of the open storage reservoir in Ballyboden
    - Increased sampling within the Ballyboden Water Supply Zone

Water quality on the Ballyboden Water Supply Zone is routinely tested and all sampling is compliant with EU Drinking Water Regulations.

Irish Water will continue to monitor works at the Ballyboden reservoir at the highest priority.

We hope you find this information helpful.

    Kind regards,
    Micheal

So to clarify, "the reason the water tastes so dirty in the reported areas is because Irish Water have increased efforts to make it cleaner."

We are also in the Sandyford area, and we can see sediment in the water, clearly visible (these are not small particles). I have taken a picture from this morning, water from the kitchen tap, which is fed directly from the mains, in a white bottomed beaker (link below). We are going to get a the water tested. Will Irish water retrospectively cover the cost of this if the sample proves not to be in compliance with the European Communities Drinking Water Regulations, 2000 S.I. No. 439?

We have received the below response in relation to the water quality in areas served by Ballyboden Reservoir.

Irish Water is aware of a number of recent complaints from customers in relation to the odour and taste of drinking water supplied from the Ballyboden Reservoir. This reservoir is an uncovered treated water reservoir and there is a project currently underway on-site to deliver a covered reservoir by Quarter 4 2018.

The sampling results for the reservoir indicate the presence of very low levels of an organic compound called Geosmin. It can result in some people detecting a slightly earthy taste or odour from their drinking water.

We can confirm that there is no threat to public health and all samples comply with the Drinking Water Regulations. We have increased our normal water quality sampling programme as a precaution to keep the situation under close review. We have put in place measures at the reservoir site to address this issue.

The areas that are supplied by this reservoir include:

    Terenure
    Rathgar
    Rathmines
    Donnybrook
    Dartry
    Milltown
    Rathfarnahm
    Dundrum
    Ballinteer
    Stillorgan
    Sandyford

We hope this information will be of help. If you have any further queries, please let us know.

    Kind Regards,
    Siobhan

    Hi

I'm in Rathmines and the water tastes awful lately, is the covered reservoir project still due to be completed by the end of this year?

    Many thanks
