Electrician not returning keys

Early last month I had booked an electrician to do some work and he said that work would start around the middle of the month. It didn't because he said he was busy with work.

I met him shortly after to give him the spare keys as it's a property which is a little out of the way for me. He said that he would start 'next week' (which was last week).

I then spoke to him at the end of last week and he said work would start towards the end of this week.

This delay has frustrated me and I rang another electrician who I had spoken to previously. He said that he could start today. I told him to go ahead. I then rang the first electrician on Friday and got his mailbox into which I explained that I felt that my work was being pushed back and that another electrician could start today so if he could ring me to organise him giving me back the spare key that would be great.

No phone call over the weekend. I rang him 4 times today but he is not answering.

    What should I do?

Since he is not authorised to have the keys anymore I feel like ringing the guards.

    TIA

Tell him that you need the keys back ASAP.

This is a CIVIL MATTER. You gave him the keys voluntarily and he is not using them and no crime has been committed, nor is there any likelihood of one from what you're saying, so it is absolutely not a Garda matter.

The voice message I left on Friday asked for the keys to be returned plus I left 2 voice messages today asking for the keys to be returned.

I need the keys to give to the other electrician.

Go straight to his home or office.

Well the key points to remember are not to give the electrician the key. It really is key to this whole conversation. Have you tried keying in his number to your mobile? That's key

If it was me, firstly I'd make a statement of complaint regarding the theft of the key at the local garda station. Then I'd change the locks. Then I'd take an action in the small claims court to recoup the cost of that from the electrician.

You either took a wrong turn or a very lazy shortcut.

Maybe there was a crossed wire somewhere.

So if I go to Enterprise and rent a car then do not return it when agreed it will not be considered theft because they gave me the keys?

Well if you caused the electrician a lot of hassle regarding contacting the Gardai. You might get your key back but he might have made a copy.

    american much

Yeah, I wouldn't like some chancer havin the keys of my house. I'd ask for them back nicely and outline what was going to happen next - and then I'd take the issue further. You're free to operate an open house policy if you want.

OP, check it his business has a Facebook page, if it does, ask him nicely but firmly to return your keys.

Could get a mate to call him out and then when he goes there you turn up and demand yours keys back.

Might as well rough him up a bit, seeing as there's two of ye. A wedgie even.

:D ...to be fair the man should be given his keys back. Wouldn't like some stranger having spare keys to my house. Although there is the possibility that he has last them...

Pfff just change the cylinder (lock) and move on
Wont waste my time and money to courts or guards , costs more than a cylinder (lock)
    Have better things to do

Good thinking OP should organise Phil Mitchell to be there!

You've pulled the plug on the first guy. All you need to do now is change the fuse....or in this case the barrel of the lock:)

So you rang Friday - then harassed the guy over the weekend - then expected a prompt reply on Monday? He's probably put it back as he's gone on Holiday, not very professional either way but you haven't given the guy a chance either.

Are you sure that he is not gone on holiday and left his work behind him? He may not have got the message?
