I'd recommend installing and running Ccleaner (Crap Cleaner)

    https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

Just be careful to uncheck "saved passwords" in your browsers when running that.

It's also a point to check installed programs. Never have more than one antivirus installed as that'll slow things down considerably.

Usually a machine runs slow after an update or an application is installed. Is there anything you changed recently?

This is a really hard question to answer. Because it could be anything. Perhaps there was some virus scan running that was slowing the computer, maybe some rogue application was trying to do something it shouldn't have been. And then maybe there was a physical fault with the system.

Ccleaner is grand to use, however I would say that it is not as effective as it once was in the XP days. OP, you should check your startup applications. Doing so is easy, right click on the task bar and select task manager. And along the top of this window click on the start-up tab. The operating system will actually tell you how much each item listed affects your performance. You can deselect items that you don't want.

And don't be too afraid to do this, as items in here are not essential but can be re-enabled later if need be.

seen as it was slow the morning you booted up, then look at was done previous day, did you install any software, drivers or updates?

    Run a full virus scan.

and if need be 'system restore' is there to help you jump back a day.
