We had bad problems with scald in our ewes a few years back. We started running them through bluestone footbaths every time they were in the yard. At first I thought we were wasting our time but there has been a huge improvement in them in the past few years.

Prevention is better than cure, very easy to control scald with regular footbaths but if they're neglected it can be a huge job.
Baby lambs come with very soft feet and if they're not footbathed at the first dose (6 or 7 weeks} the problem can escalate very quick.

We only ever use bluestone here. Is zinc sulphate as effective?

zinc sulp. works usually 2 runs clears up most

blue sone (copper sulp.) would most likely be more effective but we've use a mobile race and it would corrode it in no time.
