MP3 Player - Non-portable

My Father-in-law is looking for an MP3 player he can put MP3s - or they might actually be windows medial player format - ripped CDs on to. He has the originals so no issues of piracy arising here. I've suggested a portable device hooked up but he's really like a yoke he can get spotify on and control with his tablet (Android 6).

He was looking at this but it's a bit OTT for his needs.

Would anyone have any suggestions or if anything like that is even made anymore. He used to have the computer hooked up to the amp, but they've moved house and rearranged rooms. I may just build him a cheap HTPC, but having to have the monitor would be a bit of a pain.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Interesting, I was looking for something similar for my wife. I too could easily knock up an HTPC system but again its the monitor plus the system power consumption that I really want to avoid.

I do like your suggestion but its is a little OTT for our needs, but does fit the bill.

If he has Spotify does he really need to play MP3 discs? Also anything with Bluetooth, Spotify can be cast from his tablet

He's got a load of ripped CDs - through windows media player. I stress they're his CDs and he has the originals, but he wants to play the media files on something in the front room, he'd copy the files on to it. Previously the computer and amp where in the study; now in separate rooms. Why not just put on the CD? See point below on age :pac: and he's got reduced mobility.

His taste is somewhat eclectic and he has the stuff he plays regularly, he no dodder but he is in his 70s so I'm not sure he wants to change what works, or if spotify would have all the classical stuff and opera he wants.

Thanks to you both for the suggestions!

There seem to be some really cheap units available but my issue is how you navigate stuff on a USB key.

The pioneer n-50a is about the only one I've seen that has a display that seems to make finding what is on the key relatively easy.

This is the one that is top of my list but a bit cheaper https://www.amazon.co.uk/Denon-RCDM40DAB-Micro-Component-Receiver/dp/B00XJRIQSY/ and it still has a CD which is a good back up as I'm sure my wife will resort to it if she gets frustrated and can't find what she wants on the USB key.

On price this was what I was looking at to start with https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-CMT-SBT40D-Bluetooth-Hi-Fi-System/dp/B00NBTDUO0/ but the reviews make it sound very slow to operate and thats a frustration factor I can do without.

The USB function is important for me as my wife does't even own or want a smart phone.

I would reckon navigating all those files would be easier through the tablet than through a separate device. If he's got an android tablet then put them on a big SD card?
