Sky Q - Is it worth Upgrading from Sky+HD?

    Hey there,

Just wondering what are peoples thinking on Sky Q is? We are customers of sky since 2001 and are looking for multiroom and they said to us that its the cheapest option for us. €60 one off payment and €16 a month after that.

Just wondering is it worth it? I have heard people are having issues with freezing and stuff - we don't have line broadband but we do have Imagine lte... does that make a difference?

Anyone know how many feeds from the dish the main box will need and the other multi room box?

    Thanks in advance!

That's good to hear, how many boxes are you running?

We have it since March this year, our HD+ box died. It needs broadband and if you want multiroom, you will need Wifi. It has YouTube & Vemo preloaded. We have hod one or 2 issues, not connecting to broadband and freezing, but with the lifetime warranty, as in the boxes belong to sky, you will only "rent" them, any real problems will result in the box being replaced.

As regards picture quality, I don't pay for HD, but don't find too much difference when watching TV, yes you can notice, but with a 50" TV and a good sound system, you will never notice. I think they have not change fro watching 1 and recording 4 to recording 6 at the same time.

Does the quality of multiroom depend on the strength of the broadband connection?

We got it and had untold issues with the mini box. Even the sky engineer hadn't a clue, maybe because was almost only out at the time. Spent hours at it,came back and put in some booster and had a clue how to install and use.

Had homeplugs there and set up both boxes to use them and no issues ever since. Thirty or so euro, suppose if you're saving on sky they're as good as free

We've the full speed and latest router from virgin media, but still had sky trying to push their broadband onto us. Sky have it set up so you can't use 5Ghz WiFi on non sky router, destined to fail.

The renting idea is great, as you won't see hundreds on a new box and as we learned even a reconditioned box from sky(via siera at the time) barely lasted a year

Never had an issue with the mini box, but our main one did die recently and was replaced. The Sky+ interface feels very awkward and old fashioned once go back and use it though.

Are you saying you don't notice the difference with SD and HD, or HD between Sky+ and Sky Q?

Are the mini boxes connected with a dish feed or is it all done wireless? How many dish feeds go to the main box? 2 as with the sky+ boxes?

Main box hard wired with two wires.

Then wireless to the mini or minis

Everything is done via the network. You'll need a different LNB on your dish but there's still only 2 feeds into the main box.

So in my case they will use Imagine (my broadband provider) to link the two boxes and provide a different stream to another room?

Our broadband is quite good, I don't use the multiroom much, only got it to get the main box cheaper, bit strapped for cash at the time. But the signal is quite good, it is only a second box for when soaps are on ;)

We took the plunge today and got the 2TB box and 2 multiroom boxes. Installation next Monday with 14 day cooling off period.

    €240 for boxes and installation.

As far as I am aware the boxes never pass to your ownership, so the €240 would be for installation.

Oh yes sorry I should have said that's for loan of boxes with lifetime subscription guarentee.

If Sub stops boxes are to be returned to sky.

Just an update, we had Sky Q installed yesterday - a main box and 2 mini boxes.

Few teething problems with meant the engineer had to return in the evening at about half 5 with no signal across all boxes about 2 hours after he left, the old wires running to the main box were not good enough for the new box. No biggie and he was very nice about it and even changed the Saorview aerial wire as he said it didn't look great either.

All went well after then and I must say we are all very impressed - looks very slick and no problems with mini boxes as of yet. I had CAT5 wires already in the rooms with multi boxes and we used them instead of wireless - he said this is far and away more stable.

Only one thing I did notice is that we reached our 75% limit (20GB/day) on imagine last night about 11pm so it's something we will have to watch out for.

Just rang sky this morning to upgrade to sky Q and got a great offer on installation. A 2 tbyte box and 2 mini boxes for €230 . Just glad I didn't get it last week as it would have been €360. When I asked why the price drop since last week the girl just said an offer since yesterday was launched.

Exact same offer I got, so far it's well worth it! ... great thing is Sky Q will only be improving moving forward too!

Yes its beyond retarded the price.

When they say installation of the Mini, they mean plugging it into your TV via a HDMI cable and hitting the WPS button to SYNC it. A complete and utter scam.

Anyway, regarding the service.....It works...WHEN its actually been setup properly.

I had countless issues with the Mini upstairs, I'm using sky's broadband so have their router.

Eventually I got a booster, to which the engineer had no clue what he was doing with it.

I eventually logged into the Router and added the booster via there. Another way of getting it to work was to have the booster close to the SKY Q hub and WPS it there, then once green plug it in and out and move it to the best location to get a signal boost.

The way the systems are meant to work is you WPS off the nearest client. This doesn't always work.

My 2 cents, its good, when it works. Just make sure it works.

Are the sky Q on demand downloads 720 or 1080 ?
How many do you think were watched to reach that daily limit?

Could I leave the old LNB in place and use my current set-up for the free channels?

I've been waiting for a price-drop and more stability before ordering, but don't like the restrictions of a different mini box in each room, currently we have two-box multi-room feeding to playroom, kitchen and three bedrooms. In the Sky Q scenario that would be 4 mini-boxes, although you'd have more options for viewing. If I could keep the current set-up it would help.
