Driving across borders Spain/Portugal - toll tags?

    Hi All

Just wanted to ask a quick q about our upcoming trip. We are flying to Spain ( Seville ) but holidaying in the Algarve in Portugal, have hired a car and will be crossing the border. I know that there is electronic tolling in Portugal and i was wondering if there is any way to get one of these tags as it would make life an awful lot easier. I'm told the whole tagging/tolling thing in Portugal has changed in the last few years and i dont fancy ringing up to pay a toll every time we go anywhere in the car, given my non existent Portuguese...

    Any help much appreciated.

    Thanks...

Likely your car-hire company will have one of the toll tags that operate across the border. Something like this https://www.bipdrive.com/en/toll-system/. In Portugal you would be offered it at time of rental. I haven't gone across the border so I'm not sure if it works that way but I'd be surprised if it didn't as the motorway is seamless. Definitely get the electronic tag as in Portugal the only other way is to go to a Post office within a week to pay it.

I've never seen a toll road without it being manned in Portugal.
A tag does make it easier and allows you to use the Via Verde lane.never use it without a tag. There are penalties.

The 25april bridge is tolled into Lisbon and free going out.

The A22 is fully electronic - no barriers or collection points. I would assume this is the road that the OP will most likely be on as they mentioned they are coming from Seville and going to the Algarve

Just back from sunny Portugal and searing Spain.

Needn't have worried about the toll thing. It's quite straightforward. When you go over the border into Portugal in a non Portuguese registered car, you are directed off the road onto a slip. Here you can drive up to an automated toll barrier, which will read your reg and associate it to your credit card when you enter in at the barrier. Instructions are good so no worries. There are a number of routes into Portugal and if you look up Easy Toll it will instruct you. Just remember that if you are driving a car that is not yours, you will need to cancel the link to your credit card when you are finished to ensure you dont get someone else's bill!!
