Grass Seeding and bird problems?

Quick question....had a large rotten tree removed from garden.Flattened out the remaining soil after tidying out roots etc from stump.Put in good topsoil on it yesterday and wet the soil( was a dry day and it was crumbly),then handspread grass seed on it and raked the seed in through the topsoil.Quite a few seeds still visible on top afterwards...I didn't spare it putting it on!

Was happy with my work but was chatting a neighbour last night and he said it probably was better if I put another light spread of topsoil on top of the visible seed to stop birds eating it and to help it germinate.

Hadn't time or any more topsoil to do that!...only an odd bird at it this morning.

Will there be enough seed there to grow regardless of no top cover of soil over it?
Thanks for any replies......sorry for long post:)

Once the seed has good soil contact it'll be fine. If it's buried too deep you might never see itl

Thanks, what do you mean by good soil contact?....drizzling here today so soil nicely wet and I raked in seed well but you can still see loads of them just sitting on top.
Birds not going near them at all now, were only a few birds picking at them this morning.

    Be grand...

I put out grass seed last year, wasn't raked in or rolled and didn't rain for 3 weeks - still grew fine... ;)

How long before you noticed it growing?

Should I sprinkle a bit of 18:6:12 on the soil or leave it till the grass is actually growing a while?

Do it straight away, germinating seeds love p & k, especially P.

Birds mustn't have taken much seed anyway as it has taken very well😀...
It's on lawn, and with all the torrents of rain we have being having the undersoil is quite wet so I don't want to chance the lawnmower on it.Not like in the field for grazing it😊....grass is about 8 inches high on average ,very lush from the 18:6:12 and starting to lie from all the rain.

Am going to strim it tomorrow for its first cut...my question is roughly what height should I strim it at so as to stimulate continued growth of the new grass without damaging it?

    Thanks for any replies.
