I have a concern that i may not be kept on after I complete my probation period and I'm considering my options before this arises.
Im wondering am I better off to leave now and not have to tell a future employer that I was let go or stay and try to make things work?
If I get asked by another employer why did I leave after only a few months, having to say I was let go after probation wont go down well and I wont get a good reference from my current employer so I'm trying to protect myself from that as much as I can.

If you're not kept on, then technically you were on a "6 month contract". Easy to state in any future interviews :)

That sounds like a good explanation but what about the implications in terms of references?

Do you expect a bad reference? You're still working there so have time to buck up.

On the other hand if they don't keep you on because business has dropped off, this shouldnt affect your reference, the oposite in fact. (eg we would have been happy to keep him/her on but couldnt for business reasons)

I have a concern about that yes. Thats why I'm considering getting out or else as you say take the next month to attempt to put things right.

Do the latter. Do it in a serious way. Its not uncommon for people to have a wobble during probation and putting it right can impress.
