I had a cow who calved about 3/4 weeks ago.

When I went out tuesday morning the cow had the 4 legs up dead and was bloated, would this be tetany?

I have other cows that calved earlier, should I be worried about the other cows?

    Sounds like bloat.

    Much clover in the field?

i always do cattle under 2 years old for blackleg but never the cows

Wouldn't be an awful lot of clover

but it did get 18/6/12 about 18 days ago - I am paddock grazing ...

the cow was in great condition

Many things could have happened to your cow including blackleg if she has it she'll be a lightish black between her back legs, vacancies only a few bob in the scheme of things.

I had a Monty x cow back in March? get milk fever after a cold night. She was a fair big fat cow too.

I'd say your cow is a good milker for a suckler too. Probably rich grass and then combined with the fatness of the cow and the cold ( its like winter) night last night.
    So milk fever I'd say.

Not much of a consolation knowing but I still rather would know the cause.

Yep milk fever that's what it was.
    Big fat cow.
Older cow up to 5 or 6 maybe?
Bloat when they can't sit up.
Up to 3 or 4 weeks after calving.
    Cold night.

Heard of a case of definite tetany eight days ago and suckler cows were on bullets and licks and mg in water so could be tetany.

Exact same thing happened for us Tuesday morning, after heavy rain. Bloated and dead beside the ditch. Knackery reckoned it was tetany

Do cows with tetany bloat though?

Isn't bloat only associated with milk fever?
