RE: Process for connecting existing dwelling to water main

    Some of my family are thinking about changing from a private well to a connection to the local mains water supply that now runs along their rural side road.

    We've contacted the Water Dept of the Local authority, were told where the local water main was, got the form to apply for a connection + list of contractors approved to open the public road and were told the connection cost for a existing dwelling.

    Your website's not helpful as regards the process for EXISTING dwellings and neither is the local authority's. So, can you please explain the process in detail? All we know is:

    * We take care of the pipework inside the boundary.
    * The approved contractor takes care of the pipework on the public side.
    * No planning permission involved.

    Questions:
    * Do we engage the approved contractor on the public side? And pay them, or is this included in the Irish Water connection charge?
    * I've seen references online to road opening licences, traffic management issues etc. Are these relevant and if so, who organises them and how?
    * Who connects the internal & external pipework?
    * The application must include a map. Where do people typically get these and what type are they? (Ordnance Survey, other?)
    Anything else we need to know about?

    Hi Micheal,

    Thanks but maybe jumping the gun a bit, we haven't yet applied for a connection.

    We want to understand more about what we'd be letting ourselves in for, which led to my earlier questions.

    So if you could please explain what the process is, step by step? Assuming it's the same for every local authority?

    After you submit your application for a new connection, an inspection will be arranged by your local authority to determine what works are required and a costing sheet will be sent to you.

    It will state in the costing sheet whether or not you need a private contractor to undertake works on the public side.

    Additional information regarding the Road Opening Licence and traffic management will also be outlined as necessary on the costing sheet following the inspection.

    A map can be sought from the Planning Department of your Local Authority.
