2008 ford fusion 1.4 tdci diesel filter change

Myself and a neighbor are going to change the diesel filter on his 08 ford fusion 1.4 tdci on Saturday. Now googling it ,it seems its not as straight forward as we thought it would be, mainly down to the fact they seem to be a pig to bleed the air out of the fuel system. Can anyone advise me if they have any hints or tips about doing this perticular job? Or should we leave well enough alone? I have changed loads of different filters on VW's Audi's,Toyotas and Hyundai's and Renault's for friends and family and never had a problem but this one has me a little wary before we have even opened the bonnet. Many thanks for any advice.

Ideally you need a little primer bulb, but if you don't one option is to pre-fill the filter to the brim of diesel and swap it out as quick as possible and block the pipes with your finger to prevent air getting into the lines. The last thing you need is for gravity to suck the diesel out of the line and filling it with air. Start the engine and rev it to over 3k for a few minutes to purge out any air that might be in the system

after reading your post, I borrowed a primer bulb off a lad in work, complete with a length of clear plastic tubing attached. So we will have crack at this tomorrow and I will post the results. Oh and I will make sure the filter is full of diesel as well.many thanks!

Best way to do this is to attach a vacuum pump to the fuel return line after changing the filter.
    I use this thing:

A little primer bulb that barely has any suction won't do it.
The only way to change those filters is with a strong enough suction pump. All other little tricks like sticking your finger in the pipe, filling the filter, clamping the fuel line won't help.
It's also the way Ford to it when they change the filter, except they're using an electric pump.

OK we got this sorted. It actually went grand,no drama at all. Now at this stage I should point out the reason it went well was mostly down to the fact that after all my flapping and doubts,it turned out the bloody car had a primer bulb fitted all along! I probably should have checked that before annoying people on this forum. Sorry. Anyway took the old one out, filled the new one up the brim as Mullingar suggested, gave the bulb about a dozen squeezes and the hoor fired up and ran like a dream. Many thanks for all the advice.

I'm just amazed that Ford fitted a primer bulb to one of their vehicles! :D
    Well, learnt something today.

it seems the 1.4 tdci is the only one fitted with a primer bulb and only certain years of 1.4 tdci engines had them fitted. It seems our luck was in.thank god.
