Was very windy here last night,Leitrim, yard was covered with leaves this morning from the trees around it,all different types of trees, has anyone else noticed that trees are shedding their leaves abnormally easily and early this year?

All these trees are healthy and shed leaves are pure green.Wouldnt think it augers well for the long term forecast.

It's hard to know what way the weather will pan out.

All the signs were there early on for a record breaking droughty heatwave sort of a summer. With an ENSO ( El Nino - Southern Oscillation) in the Pacific being in a neutral state or slighty in La Nina territory and then it was moving to going into the El Nino side of neutral and if it kept rising more into El Nino or stayed where it was we would have been having 26c day weather. We had a taste of that weather just gone there. But ENSO has moved back downwards again so the Jet Stream has strengthened up again now instead of the more wavey features it had before. And a stronger more straighter Jet Stream brings more low pressure systems to our shores and doesn't allow the Azores High to build up over us.

Now saying that the British Met office think the weather will get better at the end of July. I'm not sure how they can predict the cool and warm water currents in the Pacific but there you go. But for everyone else looking at the situation it looks like unsettled for the foreseeable and not the record breaking droughty weather that could have been.

It is probably because it is quite cold. Temperatures are barely into double figures and the trees may think autumn has arrived especially with the heavy cloud cover making it appear dark.

I wonder will it affect trees fruiting later in the year?

We've no apples on our few trees at all.
Nada. None. There were no blossom at all on the trees. It was too dry and hash/cold at the time for blossom on the trees.

Think back at the time when everyone was going on about the oak coming into leaf before the ash.
It's because the oak trees roots go deep down in the ground and were able to get moisture whereas the ash trees roots spread out very shallow just below the ground surface.

So after all that the apple trees are crap but I've damson trees that look good.
