Hi, I had a guy burning off 4 acres of meadow. He was running low on spray going into the last acre so he topped up with water and added a few litres of diesel. Will the silage be edible?

I cant imagine a few litres over an acre and the majority having burned would cause too much contamination. If you grab a random handful of soil does it smell of diesel?

    Bales or pit?

If bales, can you just keep the ones from the last acre separate?

What did they say when you asked them if it would be ok? If they said it would be fine, don't pay em til you open the bales...

On a side note - I am at a loss as to why they would do this, or think this was a good idea? Did they do this without asking you first?

It's bales. He asked me if it would be ok and I asked him of he thought it appropriate as I didn't have enough roundup for him. He thought it would help the diluted roundup kill the grass. It's easy keep the bales seperate. My worry is would I know if poisonous or not? Thanks

He used the diesel as a sticking agent to help kill the grass. No big deal

    Seriously?
Farmers or should I say unprofessional messers will wonder why spraying and sprays are being more regulated.

See on Ifj that MCPA may become unavailable because of water contamination, knobs like your sprayer operator are very much in the frame as the main cause.

    Jesus wept

If you're really worried and I most definitely would, go and get the grass or silage tested.

Personally I wouldn't chance it without testing to be on the safe side.
    (God knows what could happen).
And you must be concerned if you posted here about it.

Not sure what part of the country you're in but IAS labs in Bagnelstown should be able to test the grass/silage for you.

what you'll get in response is

"sure the small bit of spraying i do...tidn't worth talkin about"

    "mcpa is harmless stuff
twon't even kill the rushes properly anyway"

"it's the tillage lads they'd want to go after.......look at the amount of spray they use

had a neighbour asking me yestarday was a 10ltr of mcpa too much in a 300 litre sprayer......seriously:mad:

it will be taken off the market sooner rather than later

Are you honestly thinking of putting this into the food chain for the sake of a couple of bales???

The evidence of glyphosade causing cancer is marginal at best and there is a lot of questioning of the meta analysis used and carried out to question its validity.

The alternative are of much higher toxicity and persistency and people should take a look at the toxicity of the allowed pesticides used in organic crops and decide which looks safer after looking at that, organic or conventional.

I not anti round up. It's needed if used right . However I personal would not eat grain that was killed off 10 days previously . I also not expect my cattle to eat grass that was killed off 10 days before

What do the organic crowd use for desiccation of weeds for a new crop?

Big dose of Boron or dose of Humic acid??

I think you can use Humic acid for burning off if you're organic.

The local tillage farmer here uses it (I think ?) for burning off cover crops before min tilling.

I think I read on another farmer forum that some organic lads use a high dose of Boron for the same job.

Never heard of humic acid used for dessication, but to help breakdown yes. Use flame weeders on veg crops iirc.

Did you see the new invention a lad in Australia made for the back of a combine that kills %95 of all weed seeds. Might be a good thing for bg

Seen it alright, will need a little more engine hp for output over here but could be a good addition. Problem with Bg is at sheds from June onwards. Makers like Case are trying out Redekopp choppers as their straw choppers are crap but it draws 20% of hp so need to boost hp.
