What is homesteading, and why does it matter today?

There is a sub forum called smallholding that would probably have people better able to answer your question.

Given your username you probably are already looking into this and know more than us.

A homestead is a term used to describe a family home some out buildings and surrounding land. It's really an American term for small farm. In Australia/NZ it seems to mean just the house and outbuildings on a farm.

Homesteading is aiming for self-sufficient living.
And can describe pretty much anything from trying to live completely self-sufficient and off grid to someone just trying to grow and raise as much of their own food as is practical.

Most "homesteaders" in Ireland are just growing a few veg and maybe keeping a few chickens for enjoyment/hobby.

Small holding and hobby farming might be more relevant terms here.

Homesteading is a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. It is characterized by home preservation of food stuffs and subsistence agriculture! It may also involve the small scale production of textiles and craft work for household use or sale. And if you want more information then  homestead.org is a place to learn homesteading and build a sane, earth-based lifestyle!
