Bascially I'm posting this here cause I can't figure out weather it's s virgin media issue or my router (Archer c7)

Been having a problem with the WiFi signal on more then one device on both 2.4 and 5. It seems as soon as I leave the room the router is in it just gets worse! Upstairs is so hit and miss one minute it's grand next minute my data is more reliable.

It's mostly smartphones I'm having problems with and the phones aren't the issue as one is brand new and other worked perfect at one point and seems to be fine in a other houses.

I've tried reseting router changing channels etc. The speeds are fine nice and high it just seems to drop off after certain point when was never this bad before.

Do you have a baby monitor, wireless cameras or anything like that? Could be causing interference.

You should look into getting a wifi extender or two.. It should give you more range around the place

Have a baby monitor but it's off and still getting issue.

I have a separate router for WiFi to my virgin media one which extends the range around the house. It was perfect up until couple months ago buts gotten really bad lately to point 2.4 and 5ghz will barely load pages on browser upstairs in house. Even in hall its messy! The data is quicker.

Is that separate access point set up on non-overlapping channels? You can check with a WIFI analyser app on Android or something like inSSIDer on a laptop.

Presumably it's set up as an access point with DHCP server disabled, two DHCP servers on one local network would alternatively break and fix your connection, speed should be good though when it's working.

I'll have to double check when I'm at the pc again but far as I know I have virgin media hub switched off for WiFi and I only use it as direct connection to my pc. It's connect to my router then which is only being used for WiFi.

I haven't changed anything that I know of for the range to drop so bad.

What VM router are you using? If it's the latest hub in modem mode try resetting the hub making it a fully fledged modem again, removing the c7 and see is there any improvement. Did you try a reset on the c7?

It's the white virgin media hub can't remember the name they upgraded me last year.

I'll play around with it tommorrw and see. I reset the c7 recently yes changed channels based on what WiFi app on my phone was telling me to. I think I have 5ghz set to auto now as no where seems to give valid best avaible channel info for 5ghz compared to 2.4

Just wondering would it be possible to have two routers one connected to the virgin media hub and one and the second floor of the house?

If so how would i go about doing this?

See if you could configure the second third router as an 'Access Point', check the web for guides.

    Homeplugs or running some CAT5.

    Config wise its simple enough:
    192.168.1.1 - VM Hub: DHCP, Router/Firewall
    192.168.200 - AP 1, Wireless only
    192.168.201 - AP 2, Wireless only

Having to install a home plug upstairs would kinda defeat the whole purpose of having a separate router to extend the range in general right?

You can use homeplugs to provide connectivity to the remote routers from your base router. Beats running cables everywhere.

So the c7 I have previously gave me wifi excess upstairs mostly fine. Now I can barely get it to last. Homeplug would improve this and hopefully keep the connection stable?

Right i dunno how many times gonna change this post ha. Its actually confusing me and im wondering why i need to extend the range of the router i bought that once done this more or less perfectly for me!?

Whats the difference with something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Powerline-Broadband-Auto-Sync-UK-TL-WPA8630KIT/dp/B01DAZPCSQ/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

    to something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-LINK-RE200-AC750-Wi-Fi-Extender/dp/B01N4I3YOB/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1499037544&sr=8-11&keywords=wifi%2Bwall%2Bplug&th=1

When i originally bought the Archer c7 i was getting decent range and speeds upstairs but its gradually got worse to the point where now when im up in my bedroom both the 2.4 and 5ghz connections just stop loading web pages on my phone after a few minutes of using them. So i find i have to switch to Data which even though the speed is slower its doing the job just fine.

I havent changed anything in the house if anything ive actually removed wifi speakers i had down stairs so it should have less interference if anything!

All i have done is tried different wifi channels based on recommendations etc.

Did you try removing the c7 completely and just using the VM hub(after a reset)

Ya I have but it's not worth a crap once I get past certain point in house.

I decided to reset everything hub and router seems when I went to bed last night it was bit better it at least lasted a while so I'll try it again tonight fingers crossed.

Don't forget to put the VM hub back into bridge mode after the reset or you'll have two sets of WiFi networks transmitting which could cause all sorts of hassle.

It works perfectly in same room then losing signal and range as I move along. Reason I bought my own router in first place.

I understand that, I have the same set-up myself with a C8 with the VM hub in modem mode. Have you got the VM hub in modem mode(magenta light on hub)?

I checked settings yesterday and both bands where switched off so it's just cable connection to pc.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This doesn't answer the question whether the vm hub is set to modem mode or not.

I'm having awful issues with my broadband. My bedroom is awful for the wifi. I have to turn my data on the majority of the time. The sitting room and the kitchen seems to be the only great places as the box is in the sittin room. Upstairs is a hit and miss

More or less same but some times are better then others.

I'd suggest researching mesh wifi networks as a possible longterm solution for homes with problematic wifi coverage....

What kind of house. How many nearby neighbours?

The sudden change from two bcasting devices to many clients says something environmental.

Have you used the wifi analyser app as suggested earlier? You need to see 'real world' signal levels too verify what's happening. Often just changing the channel number to a less congested one is all that needed.
