A few weeks ago, the Irish Independent advised that Union leaders were doing high fives and cartwheels as they announced that, after a nine year pay freeze, public sector workers were going to get an annual rise of almost 2% over the next three years. The journalist stated that this matched the highest pay rises in the private sector. Yet,in today's Independent, they report that 25% of chartered accountants had got a pay rise of over 25% over the last three years. 80% had got a pay rise of at least 10% over the last three years. The average salary in the first year post qualification was over €56,000. And no mention of a cartwheel. Surely, the Independent weren't lying?Surely, they wouldn't print false information?

I appreciate that. However, the original article stated the pay rise in the public sector matched the highest pay rises in the private sector. This is incorrect and any journalist would know this. The Independent has had an anti public-sector agenda for many years, which they are entitled to. However, they should not print information they know to be false. Either that or they are incompetent.

What you need to look for especially in The independent is the like of....pay rises in the public services match up too the highest pay rises in the private sector, basically meaningless but framed in such a way as to make it appear that public servants are getting huge pay rises. The newspaper seem to think their readers are stupid.

You don't become a chartered accountant straight out of college. There's a lot of exams to do while you work.

Its how its framed and The Independent is well know for its anti public servants stance why would you be surprised.
