Can I just ask how long people have waited to get a pre planning meeting with their local planning office. Is it weeks, months or luck of the draw ?

Really depends on the council.... They should be able to give you an idea how long it will take.

Remember we're in the holiday season currently

just ask your arch/Eng to do a sketch site layout and submit for comment(or as basis for meeting)

We organised a pre-planning meeting and had the appointment within about 2 weeks. Had no plans when we went in but had notified the council of where the site was. Just had a chat with a planner inside of what we looked to build, gave some background info on ourselves and got some feedback on what might be acceptable to the council on the site based on the area.

We enquired and there was a waiting list of two months for Galway. I didn't want to be held up that long so applied anyway. There was no major outstanding issue and it has been processed. Expecting an answer on planning in the next 4 weeks. We were told 6 weeks, that was 2 weeks ago.
