Dry them off. Put some condition on them and into the mart. You'll get nothing in the factory but could do well in the mart

But are the factories not quoting 2.60 for ewes, which would put heavy ewes coming it at 100euro?

if ewes killed out at 82euro that would put em at about 31kg deadweight... maybe 65kg live weight...

Would they have made a lot more in the mart?

Kepak athleague are great for ewes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 575 ✭✭✭Farmer_3650

They sure are.We brought 15 Cull Ewes to athleague on Friday morning. They ranged from 35 to 43kg at 2.90/kilo which works out at €102-€121 which is 12-14 euro more than we would usually get. I am hoping to sell another 15 lighter ewes tomorrow morning.
There is a huge demand for cull ewes because people are keeping cull ewes so ewe numbers are in line with the 2014/2015 sheep census for the sheep welfare scheme. If you have increased in Ewe numbers since 2014/2015,now is the time to get rid of cull ewes.

I was getting 2.6 in factory which came into 82 euro.

But it's clear to see from the mart the agents are obviously get nearer 3 euro.

40 cent is a nice bit on a 30 kilo carcass

I was passing mart last Wednesday night and called in to see how trade was and it was clear to see agents give more for cull ewes

You'd wonder how they could be giving so little compared to other factories.

According to the farmer journal ewes are making 2.60/kilo ( in Kepak Athleague) but I got 2.90 last week and earlier this week. So I don't know where they got that figure from. On 65kg ewes you would have about 30kg dead weight so worth €87 assuming it is still 2.90/kilo.

Made 89 euro for 75kg Ewes last week

Edit: looked at my docket and they were 72.5kg

Probably better off spending 25 euro and turning them in to mince and in to freezer and feeding your dogs than let those people make huge profits at your expense with prices like that.

At the mart is it? They don't weigh them around here

Yes, at the mart. I just run them through in the next lot after my lambs so I'm not hanging around. In September, the cull and breeding Ewes are in a separate section and are auctioned at the pen so not weighed.

got 92 for a pen of lightish culls in the mart last week, neighbour was going with lambs & had room in trailer, told him let them go if he got about 80

bought by factory man with a farmer underbidder, don't know if the farmer wanted for feeding or maybe numbers for welfare scheme, certainly wer'nt breeders.

Kind of wonder why they don't weigh them in some marts. Real guess work then for the factory buyers.

Kill out is gonna range too though. Any factory buyer worth his salt would be within a few hundred grams of ko weight I'd say
