Is the electoral register a publically available document ?

I needed to check the names on the register for a particular address. I was not looking for my own information. I went to the library and was told that there might be data protection issues in my looking at the register.

That seems to be the system to check your own information.

I gather that OP was looking for information relating to someone other than himself.

I encountered a similar resistance last year at a library but got what I wanted. What happened was that I needed to establish the names of the people who were residing at a particular address (for proper purposes !) so I started with the electoral register and found the information there.

The register is a public document. If the librarian has issues just say you're looking for yourself on it.

Checktheregister.ie requires you to know a fair bit of the name(s) and address(es) to check for data scraping reasons. The full public register is not provided to companies anymore to reduce that risk; only the edited register which is about 1/50th the size of the full as very few people request to be spammed!

Just had someone at the door looking to update the electoral register. He told me there are two versions, the full register which can only be used for electoral purposes by the state, and an edited version which is made available to the public and to commercial bodies for marketing purposes etc. You can opt out of having your information in the edited register, so I did.

Was your caller from the local authority? If not, I would be careful.

The Register used to be checked annually by the Rate Collector for the area. The RC was appointed permanently to the area and knew it well. Could keep track of new arrivals, and of apartments etc.

About 25 years ago Rate Collectors were renamed Revenue Collectors. As Rate Collectors retired they were replaced by new Revenue Collectors. They had additional duties such as collection of housing rents etc. They tended to be based in local council offices. On further retirements or promotions their areas were amalgamated or they were moved to other areas.

Many do not know their areas as well as did the old style Rate Collectors.

Everybody should check annually that their own family are on the register,

According to citizens info anyone can inspect the register in libraries, Garda stations, post offices and local authority offices. If the librarian was being fussy go to the post office.

It's an option to have it in post offices etc, but not mandatory.

Have to double check but I'm pretty certain that S13 (as amended) of the Electoral Act 1992 only makes the Edited Register a public document, and that it states the Full Register is only available to authorised authorities for statutory and electoral purposes meaning the full register is not a public document.

Edit: but is check the register full or edited? If full then I must be wrong.

Check the register is full but it requires knowing a decent bit to get the info.

    Thank you for your replies.

I suspect that like a lot of these things it all depends on who deals with your query ;)

My local Post office has the full "LOCAL" electoral register on display.

Libraries might have a wide catchment area, but no place will have the full country on display, so unless the OP is interested in someone local, then travel maybe be required.
