Sick Leave and Public Sector Recruitment

I am under consideration for a job in the public sector - yay! As part of this the reference check is going to ask my line manager for my sick leave record (along with a performance assessment, which I'm sure will go well. Not a worry there). Thing is that I was in an accident earlier this year so have nearly 20 days of sick leave over the past 12 months - 1 week directly after the accident and then another 2 weeks due to the residual issues - now resolved. All of this is doctor certified of course. However, anyone have any idea what the Public Appointment Service's policy is on investigating "excessive" (and unavoidable!!) sick leave? Do they have a cut off where they start asking for more information? Any advice on how best to deal with this? Should I be worried about this affecting my appointment?

I wouldn't see that was excessive, they were 2 periods of related certified leave tbf

Shouldn't be a problem. The benchmark for excessive sick leave - as it applies to eligibility for internal redeployment in the CS - has been set at 56 days in the previous 4 years.

In any event, absence related to an exceptional circumstance like an accident would probably be discounted. So on both counts you should be fine - they would be more concerned about an ongoing pattern of absence over a long period.
