This will only apply to people in/around London who can fly from Stansted, or any Irish already planning to come here, as the fares to/from Dublin are expensive.

My local music and dance festival (trad/world) is short of volunteers to work at this year's event. I already have a small group coming from Ireland and the UK but have room for about half a dozen more if you want to join them.

Free food, free drink, free condoms (while stocks last), free music/dance/dance lessons/language lessons (no French necessary  ) & tent/airbed provided, not to mention being able to chat and sing with Luc Arbogast (if that's your thing :pac: ) in exchange for 6 hours easy work per day. Minimum stay 12-17th July if you can make your own way there, or align yourself with the others who are flying into/out of Limoges airport on the 10 & 20th July.

    A 3-minute sample of the festival's 100 hours here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgKy5J_rfPQ

Bumping this thread because the aforementioned festival again needs volunteers. Due to a change in the way French university places are allocated, and timing of same, we've suffered a dramatic drop in the number of students signing up to help, so help from other sources would be very much appreciated.

Same T&Cs as above - get yourself to central France* mid-July, then free food and drink in exchange for sweat and tears.

Festival duty July 10-15 ; accommodation in a (big-ish) tent at the festival site, option of staying with me for "a while" beforehand; station/airport pick-up possible, depending on how reasonable the request is!

Volunteers must be aged 15 or older; limited places for the under-18s due to licensing rules and late shifts. (Festival is free for under 15s, so they can come too but have to feed themselves).

To whet your appetite: one of this year's main-stage performers, and featuring "our" castle in the video.

    * Festival location is near La Chatre (département 36 - Indre) ; Ryanair airports Tours, Poitiers, Limoges, or Paris-CDG ; rail stations Chateauroux, Argenton-sur-Creuse, La Souterraine.

Sounds interesting! I can't decide anything 'til I'm back from work (in France!) on May 18th so I'll PM you then.

That'll still be a month or more ahead of the majority of the French bénévoles! :D

Volunteer recruitment aside, it is a great festival for anyone with an interest in traditional music and dance. It's one part "fleadh à la française", one part instrument showcase, and three parts speed-networking! :) The formal concert programme is deliberately subdued to encourage the public to "make it up as you go along".

The instrument showcase (salon des luthiers) is the biggest gathering of instrument makers in France (possibly Europe) and the layout of stands (in a forest  ) leads to some amazing spontaneous sessions, when people borrow instruments from whatever stands are nearby and find some common tunes to play together ... and you never know who might end up giving you a quick, private masterclass ...
