Move Whatsapp from iOS to Android

Has anyone successfully done this?

ie move all photos and messages from an iOS device to Android?

I've come across one or two guides online but they don't work - one suggested backing up to iCloud and restoring to Android but this doesn't work obviously.

Any other ideas / 3P software (ideally free!) that can take care of it?

Did you try backing up and restoring from / to Google Drive instead of iCloud?

If you are moving from one type of phone to another, such as from an iPhone to an Android, and preserving your number, you will keep your account info. This information is tied to the phone number. Simply download WhatsApp on the new phone and verify your number.

Note: You cannot migrate your messages across different types of phone.
