I'm thinking of buying a gps system for the tractor. I only want a basic system for fertilizer and measuring the area of a field. Any suggestions or brands to stay away from ? A lot of friends have the EZ guide 250 or topcon.

Have the EZ guide 250 here. Very accurate for spraying and fert but wouldn't rely on it for area measurements.
2 friends have the TeeJet system and are happy with it

How many satellites link into your system ?

ez guide here too , happy enough with it , apart from signal loss near tall trees , used for fert , mowing ( no short ground ) and spraying mostly I think it hooks to 5 or 6 sats not right sure though
Friend has a patchwork system , and briefly saw it in action one evening , it worked much better under tall trees but five minutes later it froze up , in fairness he wasn't up to speed on it so might be set up problem , he bought from Robert O Shea in littleton , I think he gave him a demo unit to try out before he bought it , as for accuracy I dont know, but was better near trees, maybe my own would be better if I up graded the antennae but it does what I need so not fussed about it .

Have the EZ250 here as well and gets up to 8 satellites. It needs 5 minimum though and the more satellites the better. The biggest problem is it takes about 10 minutes to get up to the 5 satellites from starting off and if you switch off the tractor, it takes 5 minutes to get up to 5 satellites again.

Haven't a clue. If you want to be super accurate you can get an upgrade antenna ag100 I think it's called. Mine looses signal the odd time but have no issues with it

I need to move the plug in my tractor. Hit my elbow off the plug all the time and end up turning it off

I put in a switch for on and off into the console of the tractor when I changed last year, much handier now.

Excuse my ignorance, but why would you use it while mowing? Would it not be fairy obvious to see what you're at?

Not really needed in small fields, but when you go into twenty acre odd shaped fields the gps is handy for knocking out sets , so you finish the set each time with one run , no dicking about with short ground, and when you rake up same again , no short ground.

Ez250 here.. use it for everything that i do in shuts.. means you are utilising every run without doing drving idle.. even for rolling having a 7ft strip the length of the field closing a shut is a great job for fuel economy and no need for a 3 point turn on the headland!
