03 Yaris 1.0 kicking

Hi everyone

Bought a 03 Yaris 1.0 2 months ago and I’ve began to notice that the engine seems to “kick” or “thumb” when in idle. It’s like as if someone is actually kicking the car.

I opened to bonnet to see and when it kicks there seems to be some sort off hiss too.

Could it be the spark plugs?

Anyone familiar with the issue?

I had a petrol Mondeo that started this.It would thump and return to normal.It was the coil pack.

It may also be a dirty/blocked fuel filter as pressure will be low on idle.

It's probably drawing air from a split or perished pipe. Try and find out where the hiss is coming from. There is a pipe near the throttle body afaik that can perish and cause the symptoms you describe.

Use a spraybottle of water* and spray the hoses while car is running. If there is a change in idle sound you have found the hose.


* water is best but you can even use window cleaner if you have such a bottle. It won't harm the engine.
