Escape from Ireland's Eye - Swim race from Howth

I have signed up for this race in July having spent a few years doing the 1k swimathons in Howth but am nervous about how strong the currents are and if there is sufficient buoys to sight to guide you in the right direction and not to drift to far of course.  Does anyone have any advice on the best way to tackle this race

Have a good look at the buoys on the way over in the boat. when you land on the island, get your head fully around the course and listen to the briefing. There are plenty of buoys out to beyond half way. From the last buoy to home your on your own. have done it twice and didn't notice the currents being too much of an issue but weather was perfect for the ones I did. Loads of people have mentioned times where people have been very spread out due to the weather and currents. Best thing is to start relaxed and take your time, then follow the leader...unless of course....you are the leader!!:D

    Its a great event

Thanks for information, will definitely listen to briefing and take note of buoys.  I am slow but have endurance so was just a bit afraid the current would be faster than me.  No chance of me being the leader that's for sure.  Got to push the boundaries each year and find new challenges.  Lets hope the weather is on my side.:D

It is a great event. There are plenty of buoys. The current can be pretty strong and I can't sight for the life of me so I was constantly re-adjusting but never lost sight of the next one.
I did hear a couple of people say they missed a turn, though how you could manage that on an arc-shaped course is beyond me. Once you hit the with-current section you'll fly back to the beach. I'm away this year or I'd do it again. Great fun.
