Mazda6. '09 rear brake light problem

Hi there, having an issue with a new taillight I fitted,im not as massive diy car enthusiast so this may be a common problem I'm not sure.

So i bought an OEM taillight for my mazda6 on ebay, fitted it today, the only bulb that I needed to fit was the indicator, the brake LED is built into it apparently ,so when I turn on the lights, the rear light works normal.... Until I use the brake, then the one I just fitted goes off! If I brake with the headlights off, the new brake light won't come on atall. The indicator works on it, and I didn't damage it, cos I put the old one back in and it worked fine (only replacing it cos of cracked glass).
On examining the new one the only difference I see is the old one says 12v/4.2 and the new one says 13.5v/5.4 just inside the fixture but I can't access this bulb in the unit and the taillight is make and model specific. Is there anything I can do to fix this, I read that car bulbs run between 11v and 14v so it should work no?

    Any input greatly appreciated!

Did the light you bought on ebay come from Europe? Are you sure the lights came from a car the exact same age as your own as the wiring on the 08/09 models is different to the 10> facelift models.

I don't know the problem but it sounds like you need to swap about a wire or two and its probably the brake light that's the problem, if the brake light wont work when the tail lights are off then chances are if you swap around the live feed for the light and the feed from the other lights (brake) it may cure your problem.

Make sure you have a good earth connection - i.e. check for corrosion. A bad earth is a common cause of strange rear lamp behavior.
