Hi looking for some advice. I have a 2008 Seat Leon 1.4L sportsline and the timing chain needs to be done it. At this stage the car wont even start for me. Ive been told by a mechanic it will cost €1700 to get fixed but not to bother bcuz the engine is brutal in the Leon. So Im wondering would a garage buy the car off me or how would I go about selling it?? Its Nctd, taxed and only has 175kms on the clock. Would it be worthwhile calling a garage and seeing what they say?? Any advice would b appreciated.

    This is a 1.4 TSI?

It's worth nothing without a working engine and probably worth €5k with the engine working so spending €1700 if it's needed is sensible.

The thing is, even with some tax and test, with the engine gone, your car is worth €250 - ish I'd say.

€1700 sounds like insane money to do the chain in one of those, a main dealer would do it for a good bit less than that!

The chains are the worst of those, aside from those, those engines are an ok go-er. If it has a full history or you've owned the car a good while I'd get a second opinion on the chain price.

What are they doing for €1700? I assume the chain snapped or stretched to a point where it came off and the engine was seriously damaged. Might be cheaper but harder to source a replacement engine altogether. The car is worth zilch with a broken engine.

Thanks for the replies, i have it a year but it has a full service history. I was planning on saving up the money and getting it fixed but said mechanic said he wouldnt bother just to get rid. Ill ring a dealer tomorrow and see how much they would charge to do it. If they price higher than 1700 ive no other choice but to get rid for nothing. Thanks again

I'd def get another garage to do the work, this guy sounds like he doesn't want to do the job.

I wouldn't bother with main dealers. Try a few indy garages. Where you based? Someone here can recommend a garage to you. Plenty around that work on vag engines.
