    Hi everyone,

I am looking for a furniture maker apprenticeship. I have been searching the usual job sites for such opportunities, but so far I haven't been able to find anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks in advance,
    irishoak

Check with the Craft Council of Ireland. They might be able to help.

A cabinet making apprenticeship where you make kitchens and wardrobes or where you make one off furniture?

Hi, I would prefer to make one off furniture. I'm not sure if there is much opportunity for these positions though. Cabinet makers can use alot of MDF, etc. I would prefer working with solid timber making furniture such as a table and chairs, chest of drawers, or the likes. Thanks

Maybe a joinery apprenticeship would suit you better then? There aren't a lot of opportunities for high end one off cabinet making and furniture if you don't want to be working with MDF

Your best bet would be here https://www.gmit.ie/national-centre-excellence-furniture-design-and-technolgy/gmit-letterfrack Over the summer you should practice doing some joints maybe make a small table or box do detailed drawings for each joint and little project you do, build up a portfolio for yourself. Do the joints well use this for interviews it shows you have interest. Here are some photos of dovetail joint i done and two projects a table and mirror frame. The dovetail is not 100% but its close that's the standard you should be looking for if you want to get into fine furniture making. Tools you should look into getting.

A small low angle block plane Jack plane

    Tenon saw Dovetail saw

Marking gauge/ veritas ones are good

    Good square

    Marking knife

    Set of 6 chisels

    Dovetail marking gauge

    A good bench and vice

Buy the best quality you can afford.
    Veritas
    Lie-Nielsen

Look up some of the fine furniture makers here in Ireland drop them an email you never know they might take you on and if you have something to show them you stand a better chance what part of the country are you in
