The other half does not want to give up her Sky sub even though we have VM downstairs & their BB. Got to admit it was handy at one point as sky were showing F1 on standard package but that seems to have gone now

So at present she has a Sky+ sub in a HD box (old box broke and friend gave her a HD box). Not into sports persay but would like the F1 and not into movies. From what I can see a HD sub would need to be taken out with with either the Standard or variety sub to get F1, correct?

Yes, it used to be a case that F1 was free with a HD sub. Im not 100% sure if this is still the case but I would imagine it is. The HD sub will also get you the box sets and it normally costs €17 a month but a lot of times they have it for a tenner.

Just to note that if it is your first time to subscribe to HD you will be entered into a new 12 month contract. Maybe, just maybe, with a bit of haggling on the phone you might get them to drop the contract if you have been with them for a good while but I wouldnt be confident.

If you ask over in Sky's talk to forum they could advise and if necessary they will call you rather than you having to spend ages on hold looking to speak to someone

Is not F1 FTA HD on Channel 4?

Channel4, like BBC before them, only shows some races live. Other races are deferred highlights only. And to make matters worse, Eir Sports only shows some of Channel4's coverage in SD and expect you to pay for it!

What ever package the other half has must of been on the blink as I restarted the box and F1 channel is back on the EPG. Re CH4 I believe from 2019 it will be all SKy sports
