I got these from eBay just £150 and they are very good. Although i was in uk at the time. The hybrids are great.

I'd be very interested if anyone had an opinion on the above

Bought a set from Lidl many years ago. I think they were €100.I think they are still in my shed. Nothing wrong with them, in fact I used the driver for years after i stopped using the irons. If you are just starting they are perfect

If you have never played before and you want a full set to get started, they'll be grand.
If you have played a bit and know you will keep at the sport, €230 will get you a desent secondhand set that will be far better and there is flexibility to get a set that will suit you better.

Apparently they have all eventualities covered with the addition of a putting wedge. :D

Don't touch them with a barge poll, second hand for a similar price would be so much better.

Beginner sets like those have terrible balance and feel which makes them much harder to hit then for example a set of Ping G10, G15 or similar

Would this set in Argos be any better as it's around the same price ?

    Nope.

They keep re-branding that set but it's still pretty poor. Awful driver, horrendous putter thyat goes 'ding' every time you hit the ball and the irons are meh.

As has been said umteen times now. A good second hand set of irons on eBay would cost less than a hundred and be a hell of a lot better.

    Here's a set of Mizuno MP58 irons for £90.

OK- I'm actually interested in taking up golf and don't really have a clue where to start / what to get.
I don't know anyone that plays so I was thinking of getting a set of clubs and joining a local society...
I guess the reason that the lidl clubs appeal is that it's a full set and as I know nothing about clubs and though that lidl stuff is usually pretty ok and might be a good starter set....

It's quite a lot of money for something you're definitely going to throw away.

If you're just starting off, a set of irons is the first thing to get: 5 or 6 iron to pitching wedge and go to a driving range and get some lessons.

Wilson starter sets = giving up golf

Buy quality brands second hand - a beginner does not need a full bag of clubs either.

A driver, 3 wood, hybrid, 6, 7, 8, 9, a wedge and putter should be sufficient for any starter. And to be honest - the 3 wood wouldn't really be a necessity either.

    Seems we have conflicting info

I see a ping 2 set - do you guys still rate them? And think you'd get an OK starting driver for €50?

Not according to Crossfield. (in terms of wilson box set being useless)

In relation to the question related to LIDL clubs its hard to know really if they are any use without the specs - much better value though in the used club markets as pointed out

Any pointers as to what's a good brand and what's a bad brand ?

I'm looking on Adverts but don't really know what to be looking for.....

Most popular brands would be Titleist, TaylorMade, Ping and Callaway. Those are the ones you'll see most of second hand. There are others like Mizuno, Srixon, Nike and Cobra.

You'll get a better selection on eBay uk. Get yourself a parcel motel account and NI address and you'll be able to get them sent to you for small enough money.

A set of callaway X18 or X22 would be a nice set of irons to start with.Keep an eye on donedeal, adverts for a set..

If you are just starting out then try asking other golfers if they have an old set of clubs. Try to get a set that is about 10 years old..........forget Johnny Miller 40 year old blades.
When I say "set", as a beginner you won't be able to hit a driver or even a 3 wood. In fact anything with less loft than a 6 iron will probably be too hard for you to try.
Cheap bargain sets appeal to beginners as they think they are getting a lot for their money; in one way you are but you are sacrificing quantity for quality. The shafts will be poor, the heads will be heavy or poorly made and the grips will not last.

I'd suggest a half set comprising hybrid (4 iron, 22 degrees), 6 iron, 8 iron, wedge, sand wedge (optional) and putter. That's more than enough to get started. I'm not sure where you would get such a set but maybe buy individual 2nd hand clubs (they don't need to be matched). I'd hope that you could get something decent for the same as a new "beginners" set.
Look for good makes such as Ping, Callaway, Mizuno, Taylormade, Titleist, Cobra or Wilson. Avoid anything that says "stiff shaft"; forged (too hard to hit) or blades.

For example here's a decent set of Callaway Irons

    http://www.golfbidder.co.uk/models/434/Callaway_Iron_Set_X-12.html

Something like these would be much, much better than any set from Argos or Lidl.
Have a look around at adverts and post back here; somebody will help.
I have a Ping putter, Taylormade wedges, Ping irons, Taylormade hybrids and a Titleist driver so don't be afraid of mixing your set. I'd try to keep your irons the same make but wedges, putters, hybrids etc can be different makes.

    Just randomly looking....

As a beginner this set for €80 would get you started and the quality would be better than Lidl's. Add a decent putter and you'll have a nice starter set.
    https://www.donedeal.co.uk/golf-for-sale/ram-golf-irons-ram-bag-and-two-wilson-hybrid/15880664

Double the price to €150 and you can get a very good set of irons:
    https://www.donedeal.co.uk/golf-for-sale/golf-clubs-set-of-irons-/15641023
You'd need a bag, putter and hybrid.....about the same price maybe as the Lidl set (maybe a touch more) but these irons are a good make (I'd need to check the shafts to make sure that they are regular).

    Another decent set for €170.
    https://www.donedeal.co.uk/golf-for-sale/price-drop-great-golf-club-set-with-stand-bag/15848170

    €180 for these......

    https://www.donedeal.co.uk/golf-for-sale/price-drop-golf-club-set-with-stand-bag-titleist/15848217

Ask which model but they are probably decent for €100
    https://www.donedeal.co.uk/golf-for-sale/wilson-golf-clubs/15872516

A nice set of ping irons for €150 but the stiff shafts would probably not work for a beginner
    https://www.donedeal.co.uk/golf-for-sale/ping-g2-irons-amp-odyssey-white-ice-9-putter/15811512

€180 for a set of Cleveland irons (they are a decent make)
    https://www.donedeal.co.uk/golf-for-sale/price-drop-cleveland-cg-7-irons-immaculate/15841350

So look around and you'll pick up a fairly good set for around €200.
In fact for €80 the first set would be as good if not better than the Lidl set.

Adams €50 loads of forgiveness, ideal set to get started, if after a few months, maybe after lessons they're not right of you, sell them for €40 and you've only lost a tenner.
    http://www.adverts.ie/13184573

€75 Ping irons, wouldnt say the are better than above, just another set to consider. Ping are very well respected and these kind of sets last forever.
    http://www.adverts.ie/12894527

€99 Callaway x14, I wanted this irons when they first came out but couldn't afford them, like the pings, good quality irons and still being played by loads of players.
    http://www.adverts.ie/13213171

€120 Taylormade R7s, probably the ones I would recommend, loads of forgiveness, good quality and still loads od people playing them in my club.
    http://www.adverts.ie/13207512

There is other considerations like shaft flex etc, but don't get too bogged down, find something to get you started.

Second all that Senna. Those x14 were a great club good few in my club still playing them too.

Any of those irons that Senna posted would be fine. For a beginner there's no point looking beyond the Adams set. They are a bargain at that price. The Callaways, Pings and Taylormades are very good irons and would suit almost anyone; they are so much better than any Lidl or Argos starter set.

Just make sure you don't get a left handed set (obviously) and stay away from ones with stiff shafts as these may be harder for a beginner to hit (although the likes of Callaway often have "stiff" shafts but in reality they aren't that stiff).

Ping Eye 2 are a great iron. I wouldn't recommend them for a beginner as the head is a bit small (not a problem for a decent player). The lofts are weaker than more modern clubs so you may need to take a club more ( don't be fooled by stronger lofts).

I'm sure you could pick up a good Ping or Cobra or Taylormade driver for €50 or so.

Yes you'll pick up a good set of clubs that you'll grow into.

Remember you won't need a full set so don't worry about the woods at this stage other than maybe ou may want a driver but you won't be able to hit it for quite a while).

If you see a set then post here and people will give you some advice.

    +1

I reckon if you can get a club to consistently carry 100 yards (that's 100 yards in the air), you can actually have a decent round of golf. You'll be a lot over par, but you'll have gained huge practice with that club whether it be a pitching wedge or a nine iron or whatever. That's when you can then graduate to the next club up in the bag.

So a set of irons is definitely where to start and at least have a pitching wedge in that set and preferrably a sand wedge as well.

Never heard of them. Wouldn't consider them tbh. Lots of good quality out there second-hand.

Ah see them now, they are not going to go for huge money, probably less than ¿20. as crap as they would be, if you got the posted to parcel motel and it ended up costing less than €50 to your door, it's wouldn't be bad for a set just to get you out to on the course.

Thanks again. Might put a wee bid in so. I'd imagine they be dear enough posted with parcel motel too though as the size. I may check it out as
Gonna be the route anyway. ðŸ‘

They'll go as oversized which is double the normal charge iirc. Plus you have to collect them from the depot or get them delivered for another charge of €7.95.

The problem with that set is that there are no photos of the faces. For me that would be the most important consideration.

    This listing is interesting.

They will probably bid up a good bit, but worth keeping an eye on them. Edit: Don't bother, they're up to £102 now :(

And this one would be excellent value if it doesn't go mad in the last few hours.
