Can you get travel insurance after you purchase your plane tickets?

Have always bought it when booking a holiday but they were always packages. This time we're putting the trip together ourselves. Separate accommodation, flights, car rental etc.

Should we buy now before we book anything or buy after?

    After it makes no odds.

Buy insurance as soon as you start spending bucks you don't really mind losing in case something happens that prevents you from traveling for example, I usually buy within a day or two of purchasing flights

Yes, you can buy travel insurance any time until you leave.

However, part of the insurance is cancellation insurance and it only is valid for non-preexisting issues.

If you buy flights, and then someone breaks a leg, or someone in your family gets bad news about their health, then you can claim the cost of the flights if you can't travel because of those issues.
