Can you please have a look at these plugs and advise me if there's a problem and what the problem/cure is. I changed them today. The carbs are running rich, you can smell the fuel, tick over is a little lumpy and it's heavy on juice. Not sure how old the plugs are.

That looks like tis running too lean not rich, the plugs are very white, they have been running far too hot

Thanks for that. The fuel smell has me baffled now. Time to bring it to a carb expert.

Check for an air leak on the high vacuum side, split hose, sucked in gasket etc, as others have said those plugs look very lean. What are they from?

    Definitely look lean/hot.

Are you sure that they are the right plugs for the car?

    Not Your Ornery Onager

Is it a lean-burn engine? Think they need special plugs....

Not the lean burn engine, it's the 4AF engine. Recommended plugs are denso QJ16AR-U.
I have a feeling it's down to the carbs.

Do the simple things first, air leaks etc. Japanese carbs never give trouble and hate being tampered with. What were the emissions like for the test?

Is there a chance they have been just in for a very long time like 5 years plus and that's what's causing the damage?

You may well be on to something there. Car was lying up for 8 years when the original owner passed away. Son of owner did just enough to get it through nct last year. I'll check the new plugs later.

Yes I'd give the new ones a month or so and then examine them for the same condition.

I'd say closing the gaps on the plugs you have would make a big difference too, those gaps look huge.
