Hi all I'm looking for some advise on what would be the best canon lens to purchase for my canon 70D, the lens is for fast moving wildlife subjects and I'm wanting to use it mainly for video, so I'm guessing a USM model, any advice would be great.

    Thank you.

What sort of budget do you have in mind as that will greatly effect your options and is second hand an option ?

Yes second hand is an option, budget up to around 1600.00.

The 24-70mm is generally considered to be the standard lens for video on the Canon.

The mark ii version is not cheap, but it's superb.

However, 70mm at the long end may not be long enough for your wildlife video.

1600 will give you some great options.

At the very long end you have something like the sigma 150-600, it would give you great reach and has stabilisation which can help with vibrations but you would need to check how the 70D auto focus preforms at F6.3 particularly in video mode.

Shorter but a well regarded lens is the canon 400 F5.6 USM, it has a fixed focal length and no IS but at F5.6 should autofocus fine and there are plenty out there both new and second hand.

Shorter again is the canon 300 F4 IS USM, Has a faster aperture that will help in low light and also has IS to help with vibration reduction, for versatility it cab be paired with a1.4 extender to give you a 420mm F5.6. Easily got new and second hand, I picked mine up second hand for €750 earlier this year.

Canon also produce a 100-400 F4-F5.6 IS, while the Mk2 version is a bit outside of your budget you might consider the 100-400 IS USM Mk1 for great versatility but the mk2 is considered to be far superior to the mk1.

I shouldn't really be commenting here at all due to my lack of knowledge.....

Is imagine stabilization not considered important for video? (something which I think the mark ii 24—70 does not have).

You are correct. It doesn't have image (or optical) stabilization.

There are two other lenses to consider in this focal length range: the Tamron (which has OS) and the Sigma (which I don't think has it)

The Canon is considered to be optically superior to the other two. But, at a price.

If you are shooting on a tripod, then any form of OS is irrelevant.

If image quality is important, then the Canon is the way to go.

Personally, I think that the reviews of the Tamron have been very good, and at under €900 new in http://berminghamcameras.ie/tamron-sp-24-70mm-f-2.8-di-vc-usd.html it's worth considering.

Why not buy a video camera?

Possibly within your price range or even this is supposed to be excellent.....
