I see on agriland this morning that a tractor and low loader trailer destroyed the level crossing according to ianroid eireann yesterday near maynooth, how could this possibly happen as all he did was drive over it I presume

Unless there was a rise on the far side of the crossing and the back of the low loader scraped the road and tracks?
Or possibly even the stand for the drawbar could have done some damage?

The gate is nearly down on the back of the trailer in the pic, the ramp part is not going to clear it.

He/she drove through the crossing as it was lowering, the red traffic lights would be on well before the crossing began to lower (usually at least 30 seconds before initiation), the barrier then hit and caught the rear of the trailer which pulled the level crossing barrier and mechanism from the ground.

Here's a video of a similar incident a few months ago at the same crossing.

I always thought the rails were slightly below actual level crossing surface for that safety reason

    That's it case closed.

The rails were fine... It's the gates and their wiring that got wrecked.. He just drove on when the red lights came on..

. . . Kind of surprised there isn't a photocell that stops the gate from lowering when a vehicles on the crossing.. Although that'd be abused in heavy traffic

ITS NO WONDER THOSE DAMN THINGS GET BUSTED, crossing near us could have you waiting 7 or 8 minutes, ridiculous carrry-on. People get pissed off with them, we're all for safety, but these CIE lads take the mick. And if you're living near them, crossing the track during the day, get caught 2 or 3 times in one day, you'd be fit to tear them out by hand.

They should just rip them up and everyone then takes their chances with a moving train. Will save IE a fortune in maintaining and running those crossings.

Don't they have that in parts of the states and Canada?
At one point they increased the sight lines at crossings (to help vehicles avoid trains)... Accidents increased as motorists sped up...

How old was the guy driving the tractor..? Young fella with little expierience? Chancing something in a car (Taking 1 second to go under a barrier) is a lot different to gambling in a long vehicle..
