Not sure if this is the right forum for this but here goes:

I work in a small business and I do the book keeping - despite not having any accounting experience - I'm here 1.5yrs now and all is grand.

We paid an invoice last month via the bank. They have rang to say they didn't get it. It is gone out of our account. I have sent them the payment confirmation from our bank and asked them to double check the BIC and IBAN numbers. They said they did and they are fine. Who's problem is this now? They want me to ring our bank - I am not authorised to speak to the bank as its the owners name on the account. And he isnt too keen on ringing the bank over this as he is up the walls.

Who's problem is this? Surely if the IBAN and BIC are correct (as they have said they are) then they should have received it by now. It was paid almost 6 weeks ago.

In these situations I have asked for the SWIFT confirmation associated with the transaction.

This is essentially the note from your bank telling the other bank to pay X amount, on Y date and has the details of the recipient's account.

If the details on the swift are OK, the recipient can then chase it up with their bank as they'll have the reference for when the funds were received into their account.

note - I've only ever done this for international transfers, not sure if it works between Irish banks.

They should definitely have received it after 6 weeks but in my opinion it is still up to you to firstly investigate on your side that the payment successfully left your bank and if they confirm all is ok on your side only then would it fall to the person you were paying to chase it up on their side.

You could try ringing the bank, transferring through to your boss once connected and asking him to just give verbal authorisation for them to talk to you and your boss can transfer back to you straight away, not much hassle for him then.

Thanks everyone - I rang the bank and my boss confirmed with them that I can speak to them, payment went through to them so its out of our hands now.
