His next role is obviously a retired actor. Gene Hackman biopic?

Always wanted to see him going all old age action hero before he retired.

Why can't Tom Cruise, Matt Damon and Leo Di Caprio retire instead?

I'd imagine that he could easily never work again after this forthcoming Paul Thomas Anderson movie, but, equally, if the right director appears with the right project he may very well act again.

A bit shocked to hear this.  One of the best actors of all time.  Hopefully his retirement is by choice and he is not sick or anything.

As someone noted above, I would say with the right script/director he will be back!

I'd say the right role might tempt him out

A fantastic actor, elevated any film he was in, giving it his all, top class

His name personifies (if that is the correct word) method acting

That movie passed me by somehow, must get round to watching it sometime.

I was never a huge fan of any of his most notable movies, all watch once for me, except maybe for Lincoln which I enjoyed much more than I though I would. Didn't care for There will be Blood much or Gangs of New York either.

Don't see the point of the big announcement myself. Then again he always was a was a bit quirky.

His performance in There will be Blood remains one of my all time favourites.
    A truly gifted actor.

Is that main photo not a picture of, or has he morphed into, James Nesbitt? Might explain the retirement........

He's one of the best actors out there at the moment and rarely makes a bad movie.

He was always fussy when it came to a script,he wouldnt make a movie just for the money and the sake of it.

The timing is kinda suspect. His movie with PTA only wrapped last month. It's not like anyone would have expected to see him in anything for another 5 or 6 years.

DDL has difficulty moving on from roles. He's talked about it in the past. I reckon he says "never again" after every film. So assuming there isn't some other reason, say heath related, I'm inclined to not read too much into this. It's not the first time he's retired.

Fantastic actor, at least he goes out at the top and won't end up like De Niro or Pacino doing films just for the paycheck and leaving behind a lot of dross. He probably has the greatest performance given by a actor imo in Daniel Plainview in There Will be Blood, and so many other performances that leave many others in the shade. No actor today comes close. Still think his performance in the Name Of The Father is very underrated.

"My Left Foot" - his acting in that was something else.

The Daily Mail mentioned that he portrayed Christy Moore in that movie..... the Daily Mail eh?

I heard he had dementia but presume that is just a particularly nasty rumour. But maybe he is not well. I really hope that is not the case.

Wonder whats behind the short and snappy retirement announcement, would love to know the man a bit more. I'd say his head is wrecked with the method acting, imagine being that many people, its hard enough being 1!

    I don't think it's the same thing.
As I recall his disappearance in the late 90s was more a "leave of absence thing"....so he could get away from the acting world for a few years.

This one seems much more definite.
I think he really means it. His output - although never prolific - has become even more spare than ever recently - only 3 films in the last decade (with a fourth in post-production). He'd become much more selective. Maybe he just feels there aren't enough good roles....or just got bored with it.

I think Matt Damon is a good actor and Tom Cruise has done some great films so I don,t mind them so much but agree totally about Leo Di Caprio who is one of the must overrated actors ever.

Agreed he certainly is a long way off being as good as DDL.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Leo is fine, he's very good at picking out good roles for himself and working with great directing talent. But it always drives me mad when they mention him in the same breath as prime De Niro or a Day Lewis cause he has never disappeared into a role. Leo is playing Leo in every movie he makes.Even for his Oscar winning film The Revenant, for me he was blown off the screen by Tom Hardy's amazing performance. Good solid actor but not in the same league as Day Lewis.

Only time Leo didn't play Leo was in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. His early performances like in The Basketball Diaries and This Boy's Life are still his best stuff imo.

The Bear out acted all in The Revenant :P

I hope DDL comes out of retirement to play Bruce Springsteen if his biopic ever gets made
