Cheap runner: Toyota, Ford, Mazda, or Vauxhall

I am looking for a cheap runner who is reliable (in general, and based on your experience). Here the conditions:

    1) 1000 Euro max
    2) 1.4 max engine size (i need two seats, space is no issue)
    3) Insurance might be expensive for me (no experience driving in Ireland, only Europe, which means it is not accounted for here) so this may be major
    4) Easy going car, reliable
    5) If it lasts 1-2 years, it has done what I want

I heard good stories about Toyota, Ford, Mazda, or Vauxhaul. How do they compare in your view?

(e.g. I had very good experiences with a Maxda MX5 that i drove for 16 years almost without repairs; only oil change and timing belt.)

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks, Ampleforth
