Nursing/ Midwifery Working hours

After many years of considering if it's the right thing for me and what I really want to do, I'm seriously considering going down the route of midwifery as a career. My only last unanswered question really is that so many people say to me the hours are terrible so it leads me to this question.

If you do 40 hours a week as a nurse or midwife and you usually do 12/13 hours a shift how do you do a full week or as I sometimes hear a 'week of nights'. That's obviously SO many more than 40 hours a week plus do you get paid extra for extra hours/ nights extra?

    Thanks in advance :)

the hospital where I am pays monthly therefore you do 3 weeks of 3 days 12 hours per day (108 hours) and on the fourth week you do 4 days x 12 hours. total = 156 hours divided by 4 = 39 hours per week.
Regarding nights usually you do a week of nights then your off for a week though and start back on days. And no its not more than 40 hours every week its usually 36 but it all balances at the end of the month
