Don't want to be a nay sayer but the last operator to serve Waterford went bust last summer. Small city, high unemployment, airport out in the middle of nowhere with no public transport links that I know of. Tough sell.

Will they rival Aer Lingus and Ryanair in years to come?

    No

They appear to be a ticket seller using a Slovenian airline Lippican Aer as their operator; not an actual airline at that. They do not hold an Irish AOC (Lippican hold a Slovenian one)

What? It's on a good road about 10 mins drive off the ring road, but I agree it'll be another short term solution.

Another airline started flying from Waterford to Gatwick with a 19 seater in 1985.

It did not go bust, it is now one of Europe's largest carriers, you may have heard of it, name of RYANAIR!

Waterford Airport is a no-hoper. I remember the bold Albert Reynolds opened their new terminal in April 1992 and in August the same year Ryanair pulled out. It's all on their own website here: http://www.waterfordairport.ie/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=16&Itemid=59

Whatever about Ireland being too small for an inter-city railway network, it's definitely too small for internal air services and the number of airports it already has.

A time before the M9 and all the cheap flights out of Dublin, and they were offering cheaper flights than their competitors at the time. Apples and oranges.

Exactly. Waterford is already struggling with the short runway and not being able to take 737s or A319/20s

If the parish pump ideology was applied to Ireland we'd have subsidised flights out of Donegal, Sligo, Knock, Galway, Shannon, Kerry, Cork and Waterford. Most of the population in Ireland live on the east coast and yet there is 1 airport (in the Republic) offering regular flights. Meanwhile on the west coast we have 5 flights offering international flights and have a look at the Galway forum where they are trying to put a case for flights from Galway Airport again.

Best of luck to the new airline but they have their work cut out.
