Do you ever hear the sink gurgling.?

If so, you need a deeper trap or a durgo valve (air vent) to stop the water (seal) been sucked out of it.

An easy way to remove sink smells is to put a few tablespoons of washing soda crystals (supermarket) into the plughole then pour in a kettleful of boiling water. Probably do it every couple of weeks as necessary.

The gurgeling is the water been syphoned out of the trap under the sink.
The purpose of the water in the trap (when it's there) is to stop smells coming back up the drain.
Powder won't cure that. But it might help.

Well I suppose so, but people were using washing soda in similar situations for generations before Mr Muscle! You can use washing soda, bicarbonate of soda (bread soda) and/or vinegar for pretty much any household job you come up with. Just use gloves if you are using washing soda, it will not do your skin any good.
