Tax on refunds recieved

We recently go a tax bill from revenue for 2016, some of which was for undeclared income(which we were not even aware of) and some also appears to be a tax on medical expense refunds.

How can we be taxed twice on medical expense refunds twice, have we not already paid the tax on this ??

Revenue have now cancelled our HTB application which was already approved, now with Leo talking about cancelling HTB we might not get an application resubmitted in time. Yet Revenue gave us a full clearance for 2016 only a few months ago.

You can't be taxed on a refund of tax, how have you come to that conclusion? Did you get an amended notice if assessment or a P21 balancing statement? What was your income that you weren't aware of?

Sounds to me that you paid medical expenses and claimed a refund on them from the government and from health insurance which you are not entitled to.

What undeclared income were you unaware of? Why are you unaware of one of your income sources?

    Story seems fishy to me.

And what you are saying makes no sense, I'd read the letter again. Are you sure it's not interest and penalties for failing to declare your income which you were "unaware of"?

Shares that were sold last year by my employer, didn't even think of it requiring taxes. Even got a tax cert in march and there was no mention of it.

It might be penalties i got no letter yet, just seen it updated online on Wednesday.
