There are 2 of these in our house so very familiar with updating channels etc, however one has given up the ghost.

I can get a replacement, Arivia 120 still in box, never use for €37 delivered, so no 'getting to know you' hassle.

Am I mad to do this or better to get a new up to date FTA box (as no longer need a combo box) from freetv, for about €40.

    Repair it. Probably only capacitors.

Some tells me you could repair it, it might just be the capacitors :)

Have been using fta for about 10-12 years now, got Freesat boxes last year, no comparison, auto updates, 7 day epg, Yes they are more expensive than a FTA box but a lot less hassle.

You do not say which part of the 'combo' you no longer need ....... The satellite or the terrestrial part?

I would wonder why the terrestrial service would no longer be needed ......

You must have got a new TV since you bought the original Ariva, I assume you'd be aware if the TV itself has a satellite tuner?

On the ball, tv has saorview receiver built in. Have freesat on a humax box as well but want to replace the dead arvia with a sat receiver, so I can continue to watch FTA while recording with the freesat box and as a backup if one box fails
    again.

@ winston_1 I don't think that is an option for a 70 y.o. and who knows nowt about electronic component repairs:rolleyes:

I found using a STB and the TV tuner to be a hassle which is why I bought an Ariva 120 way back.
I would do the same again rather than use two devices (in your case TV and a Sat receiver).

I'm aware of that all right.

Are there any cons about buying another brand new Ariva 120 as it is such an old model now.

As far as I am aware the 120 is no longer available new and has been replaced by other model/s.
