Any issues? Timing belt intervals, service intervals etc? I have my eye on one or two up north.

Engine has been used in numerous VAG cars since about 2008, available in different power outputs ~ 120bhp, 143bhp and 170bhp. Usual VAG diesel issues such as EGR valves failing, flywheel, etc. Make sure to do a detailed history background check as they hide high mileage well so are prone to clocking. S Line is really the nicest spec to get and makes the A4 appear more handsome than the standard SE models. I'd look at the VW CC also, they tend to be higher speced than the A4 and cost a bit less to buy too.

When you say hide mileage well, what do you mean.

I created a similar thread on here about 8 months ago when I was about to pull the trigger on one of these cars. And in the end we did! My concern at the time with the car we were looking at was it had relatively high miles (80k) for its age - 131. But the car was in pristine condition and all its history checked out.
I'm glad to report that the car has been faultless since we purchased, touch wood! Very happy with it.
I'd totally agree with Bazz that the S Line makes them much prettier but you'll also pay a bit more too. And by "wears miles well" I assume he means that they are generally a solid well put together car with nice interior plastics, so even a big miler can look very fresh.

Ah grand I was thinking something completely different!! There are a few 2013-2014 models with 40k-50k+ miles for anywhere between 14k-16k sterling. With a quick currency exchange and vrt included still saving roughly 2-3k on prices in south. I have 2008 Ford Focus to shift but she runs like a dream and tight as nut for a car with 150k+ miles on it. I just would like a change and a little bit of comfort with leather seats and sat nav etc.

What I mean by hide high mileage well is that the cabin is well built and durable but the downside is that because of that they can be candidates for clocking. A good number of these cars come in from the UK mainland where they would have been ex fleet cars bought cheaply. So just do the proper background checks on both the car and the dealer selling it.

As already mentioned try and go for the sline 177bhp. I had a 2010 SE 136bhp and found it a tad underpowered. Although the sline maybe a little bit pricier you will get it back when you come to changing down the road....

You will get an A6 for a little bit more and way better spec, those A4's are boring as ****.

What are the service intervals and timing belt intervals on these engines?

Oil and filter every 15K and belt every 120K.

120k for timing belt? I did Google before I seen your reply and some quarters were suggesting 60-70k.

    For that year A4 2.0tdi it's either 210,000km or 225,000km.

    Probably 225,000km I reckon.

Its over 200k anyway for the belt or every 5 years.
Buying a 13 you would be doing the belt next year regardless of mileage on it.

They are cheap enough to do.
I think it's 450 on Audi's fixed price servicing for belts and water pump.

I know Ford do etis where you can access basic individual car information from vin or reg number. Does Audi do anything similar?

    Yeah I think so.
If you contact Audi (any Audi dealer should do) and give them the VIN or the reg number, they should be able to look up the details of the car including its service history. Audi put the service history of the cars online now - they don't stamp a service book anymore.

    http://prsearch.planetvag.com

Also you can type in the PR codes above to see what options are on the car.

The sticker with the codes is usually located in the spare wheel well.
It is on my A6 anyway.

Some won't do this due to data protection etc...

    Slightly zombie post.

Has anyone a 177bhp 2.0 TDI A4? How does the mpg look? Not hearing great things about mpg. Might be looking at one in a day or so but might pass if mpg is as bad as I am ready in some quarters.

    TIA

I Have the same engine in A6 (Bigger Car) and get average 800km to full tank (Mainly long distance driving).

    Is that a c6 A6 or c7?
I have a 2010 c6 with that engine , there is a 68 litre tank in them, you should be getting more than 800km especially on long journeys.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 544 ✭✭✭SBPhoto

I agree with XsApollo, thats a very low figure for mainly long distance, i get 1150km to 1200km on a full tank, 2016 A6 C7

Really? ya its a C7 and had software emissions fix update. I'm not sure what it was like prior to that as I purchased it second hand.

    I'd say it's low.
I get 800 out of a tank around town doing short journeys and not easy with the accelerator :-)
Also with 19inch 255 wide tyres.
I drove from Paris to shannon co.clare a few weeks ago on less than 1 tank with a fully filled boot and 4 people.
It's around 1100km drive and I had a range of about 200km left in fuel according to the trip computer.
Long distance driving should easily be over a 1000km
Nearer 1200km doing steady motorway speed.

How do I sort this then. It's on 20 inch TTRS. Would that make a difference?

Yea wider tyres would make a difference.
What kind of difference I wouldn't know.
Mine are 19in 255 wide so are pretty wide.
How to go about looking at why your fuel comsumption is low I have no idea.
