Unused Chimney / Fireplace: What to do?

We have a chimney / gas fire that we never use. My current plan is to completely seal it up and cut off the gas, perhaps converting the fireplace into a small inbuilt bookshelf or something.

But I'm not sure how to go about doing this. Should I get a special cap for the top of the chimney? From reading around it looks like this is a good idea, to keep out rain and birds and bird poop.

Will it be OK to block the thing up from the bottom and at the top, long-term? How about dampness issues etc? Will it help with energy efficiency and the like?

The other option is removing the chimney breast... probably not a goer as it's a late 80's semi-d hollow block house and the neighbour's chimney is directly opposite ours. But maybe so? Again I have no clue.

If anyone has advice I'm all ears! Thanks!

We capped some chimneys at the top with lead. However there is still ventilation which I've been told is important so check this out before you block them up completely.

I've also read about some kind of terracotta cap you can get that'll let it ventilate a bit. Interesting that you can do it with lead though!

The type of chimney pot we have has ventilation holes in it.....think it's something like that!
