Assistance with Dental work

    Hi,

I am currently part time (working 1 day a week) and receiving Jobseekers Benefit.

Over the past few days I had an awful pain in my jaw and it turns out I had an abscess and need to get two root canal treatments.

The problem is it costs close to €2,500 (€1,200 each) for this, which I cannot afford. I have asked about an extraction but I was told by the dentist this would cause further problems and be more expensive in the long run.

I was wondering if anyone here that works for the social welfare or has any knowledge on it, knows if I can get any assistance or am I on my own ?

    Thanks for any replies,

Root canal should cost around €600-€800 per tooth, shop around.

Do you have a medical card? If so it will cover the cost of the extraction.

    That's about it unfortunately.

PRSI covers one exam a year.
Medical card covers one exam and two fillings per calendar year and extractions.

There is tax relief of 20% for root canals.

Other than that you're on your own I'm afraid :(

Or talk to your dentist, most will accomodate a payment plan.

You can get it priced from €300 to €500 around the Bath Avenue area of Dublin 4. ;0

Thank you for the replies. My dentist actually told me about the 20%. Which still leaves me with a bill of €2,000. :(

I don't have a medical card unfortunately. My initial reaction was to extract but they're both molars and both beside each other and my dentist has said that extraction will give big complications in the future with my bite etc and will be more expensive in the long run.

One of the canals is narrow so I have to go to a specialist for it, at a cost of €700 each. and then the crown is another €600-€650.

If you only work one day a week and are on JSB, surely you qualify for a medical card also? No good now as it takes ages to process.

    Hi moc85

I would definitely get a second opinion on this.

    * U may be able to get root canal done now and the crown done much much later.
    * An option may be to extract one of the molars (the one with the narrow canal) and root canal the other. So u are not losing two molars.

Plenty of people have molars removed and without any significant impact - but u do need expert advice on this.

Smiles.ie and MyDental.ie are very competitive on price and might be worth researching.

    Best of luck.
