Compressing soil

    Hi folks

Building a 'tier' at the end of the garden. It will be 6m X 3m and .5m deep.
The plan is to fill it with soil, a layer of hardcore, a layer of sand with patio slabs
    on top.

What is the best way to compress the soil to avoid any settlement in the future.

    Thanks

    Hire a "whacker plate"

Hire a whaker for the day cost under 20 euro. And keep going over it.

A Jumping Jack was recommended, much difference in the overall finish between them?

Do the same job but the jumping jack will half kill you in the process.

Use anwjacker plate, lay filling on layers and whack each layer.

    Might need a retaining wall.

or some sort of retaining structure

in addition whacking soil is not the way to go as you will make it pretty impervious and will pond water underneath the slab/hardcore.
You also need to consider drainage for whatever retaining you do
