Painting over wallpaper - advice

Hi there. I'm new to the forum, and did a search, but did not find the advice I was looking for.

Background: I have a low budget and about 12 working days to complete this task.

I am moving into an old terraced house which has many layers of wallpaper. In the long term this will need to be removed, and the walls plastered and painted. Right now we do not have the time or money to do this. What I want to do is paint over the wallpaper for a quick fix that will last us a couple of years.

The trouble is that the wallpaper is damaged in several places, for example, where an old pull-cord heater is going to be removed from the wall.

What can I do to repair the damage to the wallpaper, so that the walls look fresh enough, once painted? Are there any filler products I can use to smooth it? I would really appreciate some advice from someone who has done this on the dos and don'ts of the situation.

    Thanks in advance!

I know you can paint over wallpaper but be careful cause some wallpapers have a coating on them so you might need a Primer before you paint them, even if they are in perfect condition.

As far as a filler goes for fixing damaged areas - I'm really not sure, I know a caulk will fix plaster but I dont think it will stick to wallpaper? Maybe call one of the specialist paint shops like ColourTrend - they might be able to tell you if its possible?
